IBM Cognos Express – not so express install

A considerable time passed by last week trying to install IBM Cognos Express. I didn’t read the requirements beforehand. I couldn’t have anyways, just as I am typing this blog entry, I find out the requirements link on the IBM website is dead.

Started by installing Windows 7 Professional – which takes about two to three hours until it’s up to date. Wrong: Installing Office 2013 64 bit – only 32 bit is supported by Cognos Express. Wrong: Installing Office 2013 32 bit – Cognos only works with Office up to 2010. Wrong: trying to uninstall Office 2013 and install Office 2010 – the installation is broken afterwards. Wrong: trying to install the Cognos client software before it is absolutely sure there are no updates for Windows and Office anymore. This took me about two days…

Right:

  • Fresh install of Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit are fine).
  • Update until Windows Update is showing no more updates.
  • Install Office 2010 32 bit
  • Update until there are no more updates shown for Office 2010.
  • Install Cognos Express
  • Open Cognos Express Manager and wait for the installation to finish
  • Install subcomponents of Cognos within the web interface, wait for the installation of those to finish
  • Download and install the client components of the welcome page

This took another day, but it finally works. So for anybody who wants to try the Cognos Express trial version: make sure you take these steps (all installations were done using a dual core, four GB RAM virtual machine).
