Quite often, if you talk to Apple Fanboys about their iPhone, they say „but the apps are checked if they could cause any harm“. Well, here’s an example how thoroughly those apps are „checked“ – a simple ‚flashing light‘ app contained a network server that nobody in Cupertino noticed until engadget ran a story on this…
You may ask yourself, why on earth would anyone pay 99 cents for an iPhone app whose sole purpose is to flash bright, solid colors? We certainly wouldn’t recommend it, but Handy Light has a great little Easter egg that undoubtedly doesn’t jive with the folks at Cupertino HQ. Like Nullriver’s Netshare app before it, this little piece of software allows for SOCKS proxy tethering, without having to sign up for AT&T’s tethering plan.

Oh well. My first Android Device was a Samsung Galaxy (I7500), which did get official Android 1.5 updates; an Android 1.6 images was leaked, which made it possible for custom rom cookers to publish a modded 1.6 version. The GAOSP project ported 2.1, but without support for the camera. Long story short, even if the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S are impressive, I won’t buy one.
With the Motorola Milestone, it’s different. The phone has a hardware implemented signature check (like the Droid X) that prevents it from booting roms that haven’t been released by Motorola. If Motorola decides to not update the Milestone anymore, I will be stuck with Android 2.1 – missing out new features (like, with Android 2.2, the JIT compiler).
In this case it’s „Bye bye Motorola“ for me. The list of manufacturers to buy from gets shorter and shorter. HTC has known not to lock down it’s devices (those can be unlocked using simple hacks; it looks like to be intended to give a small, but not impossible challenge to the developers).
vpn tinkering
I am working on my new vpn setup. So far, I can ping the local 192.168.10.0/24 network from the vServer, but that’s about it – the TV Box doesn’t see the 10.10.0.0/24 network, and is not able to ping the roadwarrior.
Well, some reading to do during vacation!

… und zwar zu netclusive. Dort gibt’s nämlich vServer mit (auf Anfrage) TUN/TAP interface.
Warum ich das brauche?
Nun, da es bei mir Zuhause gerade gefühlte 45°C warm ist (ich mach also der deutschen Bahn noch keine Konkurrenz), habe ich mir überlegt, mal ein wenig meiner Hardware auszulagern und zu konsolidieren. Das heißt, mein VPN-Endpunkt zieht jetzt vom heimischen Schreibtisch in’s Internet um, und reauktion.de eben auch.
Der Preis bei netclusive liegt geringfügig über dem des alten vServers, aber dafür sind die Leistungen besser (selbst in der Sparversion 1GB RAM vs. 256MB, 30GB HDD vs. 5GB).
Und da ich ja ab nächster Woche Urlaub hab’…

Websperren kommen auf EU-Weg zurück
Wie schon damals bei der Vorratsdatenspeicherung (in Deutschland abgelehnt, dann über die EU eingetütet), kommen jetzt die Websperren wieder zurück.
Eigentlich entwaffnend ist die Aussage der führenden Politikerin, warum man so etwas brauche:

Es sind die gleichen Argumente, die auch schon Ursula von der Leyen brachte. Wir wissen nichts, nehmen aber an, was wir brauchen, um unser Anliegen zu unterstützen.
Da sei es nur am Rande erwähnt, dass es auch hier nicht um „KiPo“ geht, sondern um Jugendanscheinspornographie – d. h. die Frage, ob es sich um Kinderpornographie handelt, oder nicht, liegt im Auge des Betrachters (Richters), und hat nichts mit dem tatsächlichen Alter zu tun.
Man wird langsam echt müde und ist versucht, den ganzen Kram einfach ungeachtet passieren zu lassen.
Was mich schon seit Zeiten extrem nervt, ist, wie Excel mit csv-Dateien umgeht. Zum Einen werden beim Import alle möglichen „Formate“ erraten (die in 90% der Fälle F-A-L-S-H-C sind), zum Anderen beim Speichern z. B. Feldtrenner nicht „escaped“. Das geht mir gehörig auf die … – z. B. versuche ich gerade meine Kontakte zu bereinigen. Größter gemeinsamer Teiler ist nunmal das Outlook-CSV-Format. Leider kann man weder in google contacts, noch in Outlook (2007!) Änderungen auf alle Kontakte machen (z. B. kann ich im Internet mit ldap-Adressen wenig anfangen).
Langsam frage ich mich, ob ich nicht meine Kontakte wieder in ’ner Textdatei pflegen soll.

The whole set was 350€ – including a remote control unit, the ready to fly helicopter, an additional battery and an adjustment help for the blades. I tried a lift on saturday, but unfortunately, that was a bit too early. Good news: I did an upside down flight. The bad news: it was half upside, and then the full way down, so that the head crashed into the stone decoration at a pond. Bought a simulator already, though.

Mit der Gewaltandrohung gegen Gäfgen bei der Fahndung nach einem entführten Kind habe Deutschland gegen das Folterverbot der Menschenrechtskonvention verstoßen, entschieden die Straßburger Richter. Sie warfen Deutschland eine mangelnde juristische Aufarbeitung der Folterandrohung vor.
